In Borzoi, our code
of ethics states that a bitch cannot be bred prior to her 2nd heat or 2 years
of age, whatever comes first. We normally do not breed a bitch until she has
attained her AKC conformation championship, and is fully mature (in our
opinion, at least 4 to 5 years of age). By this age, to the best of our
ability, we know whether there are any medical or genetic conditions which have
to be addressed or might preclude us from breeding this female.
Our
pups are kept with us until they are
at
least 12 weeks old (preferably 16 to 24 weeks of age), and depending on the
puppy, some up to 8 months of age. Keeping the pups with us longer allows us
time to properly vaccinate, permanently identify (microchip and/or tattoo) and,
along with their Mom, teach the pups proper behavior, crate train them, leash
train them, stair train, house train, vehicle riding train, and cat train them
BEFORE they are placed into a home.
Our
family picture illustrates that our involvement in purebred dogs is truly a
Family Adventure, one in which everyone participates, learns, appreciates, and
loves the dogs!
Our puppies go to
people who must provide references (including Veterinarian reference). They
must also allow us to inspect their home prior to the pup going to them and
they must have a securely fenced in yard; they must stay in touch with us and
provide us with yearly photos of our puppies. In addition, they sign a contract
and agree that, if, for any reason, EVER, they are unable to keep or choose to
not keep our puppy, the puppy/dog MUST BE RETURNED TO US with its registration
papers!
Our
puppies cannot be resold, co-owned,
placed with another person, pet shop, puppy mill or shelter. WE
get the puppy back and will take it back for the rest of his/her life. Our
companion quality (non show/breeding quality) pups are neutered or spayed prior
to going to their new homes and can thus NEVER be used in a breeding program.
I
am hoping that you will continue to promote the category for purebred
enthusiast, with number criteria that will in turn encourage other purebred
enthusiasts to join your fight to get stronger laws established in our State to
protect these innocent animals.
